What sits inside a benchmark.
A broad US index is not an even split across the market. Weighting by company size means the largest sectors set most of the daily move — which is why knowing the composition matters before taking a position. Figures below are an indicative sector breakdown of a broad US benchmark.
Indices, explained.
- What is an equity index?
- An index measures the combined value of a basket of listed companies, so its level reflects how that group is performing as a whole rather than any single share.
- How is an index level calculated?
- Most benchmarks are weighted by market capitalisation, so larger companies move them more. A few — the Dow and the Nikkei 225 — are price-weighted, where the highest-priced shares carry the most influence.
- Why trade an index instead of shares?
- One position gives exposure to an entire market or region, which spreads single-company risk and is often used to take a broad directional view or to hedge existing holdings.
- When are index markets open?
- Cash indices follow their underlying exchange — roughly 13:30–20:00 UTC for the US and 07:00–16:30 UTC for Europe. Session times and holiday closures are published per instrument.
- What is index rebalancing?
- A scheduled review where constituents are added, removed or reweighted. Volume is typically heavier on those days as funds tracking the index adjust their holdings.
- Do dividends affect an index?
- When a constituent goes ex-dividend the index level adjusts down by the weighted amount. How that is handled on an open position is set out in your account terms.
