What moves currency pairs during the session overlap

A market with four clocks

Foreign exchange has no single exchange and no closing bell. Liquidity rotates around the globe as Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York open in sequence. Each centre brings its own participants, its own flow, and its own typical volatility profile.

Why overlaps matter

When two major centres are open at once, the number of participants quoting and hitting prices roughly doubles. Spreads tighten, depth improves, and moves that would stall in a single-centre session tend to extend. The London / New York overlap is the densest window of the day for the major pairs.

  • Tokyo and Sydney overlap: measured ranges, JPY and AUD crosses in focus.
  • London open: European flow arrives, ranges often expand sharply.
  • London / New York overlap: peak liquidity for EUR, GBP and USD pairs.
  • Late New York: liquidity thins, spreads widen into the roll.

Using session structure

Session structure is context, not a signal. A breakout in the middle of the London / New York overlap has a different quality to the same breakout in the last hour of the New York session, when a handful of orders can push price further than the flow behind it justifies.
